Concordia University Professor Homa Hoodfar

On Monday, Iranian news agencies reported that Dr. Hoodfar has been indicted.

Please join the more than 22,000 Canadians calling on Iranian authorities to immediately release Dr. Homa Hoodfar.

Professor Hoodfar’s family reports that neither her lawyer nor her family have been informed of the actual charges against her. Her lawyer has not had access to her file and has not been allowed to discuss the accusations with his client. We believe Professor Hoodfar is still being held in solitary confinement and may not be receiving the specialized medical care she needs for a degenerative, neurological condition.

Our original call was to the Canadian government to act quickly. Now we’re focusing on the Iranian government. Thank you for helping us send a strong message to the Iranian government to immediately release Dr. Homa Hoodfar.

With deepest thanks,
Alex Neve

Concordia University Professor Homa Hoodfar detained

in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison

Dear Canadians,

I need your help today.

The arrest of Professor Homa Hoodfar is one of those times when I need to reach out to the largest possible family of human rights supporters.

Dr. Hoodfar, the aunt of our close friend and colleague, Amanda Ghahremani, was arrested, interrogated and detained in Iran on Monday.

I am too familiar with how troubling a situation this is.

Dr. Hoodfar is a prisoner of conscience. We need to ensure her swift and safe return to Canada. Dr. Hoodfar is an anthropology professor at Concordia University in Montreal who does research on issues that affect the daily lives of women.

Please join Amnesty International’s call for the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Homa Hoodfar >>

Yesterday, we issued a press statement calling on Iranian authorities to release her immediately, and for the Government of Canada to take every possible diplomatic measure to ensure she is freed and able to safely return to Canada.

This message to you is being sent by email and through our Facebook and Twitter pages to hundreds of thousands of Canadians. Soon we will issue an Urgent Action to mobilize our worldwide network of letter-writers to take action on this case. This is our most urgent work, and we are putting the full weight of Amnesty International behind Dr. Hoodfar. We’re too familiar of the risk faced by a woman in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison.

Our government must hear how serious a situation this is, and hear that Canadians expect their government to protect each and every one of us from arbitrary detention and other grave human rights violations.

Please sign our petition. It will take only a minute of your time to add your voice to our email petition to Minister Dion.

After you sign, you will be sent an automatic message that invites you to do a few additional things to help us mobilize more Canadians.

Thank you so much for reading this message and taking it to heart. As I think about Amanda’s courage in talking to the media about her aunt, I’m given hope that Amnesty International has the support of caring individuals like you who recognize and take action in urgent circumstances like these.

P.S. It was no easy decision for Amanda and her family to reach out to the media and to Amnesty International to make this case public. Amanda has told me how much Amnesty International’s support means to the family, which is why I am asking for your help. This case has been of concern since March. Dr. Hoodfar has been subjected to repeated interrogations by the Counter Intelligence Unit of Iran’s National Guard over the past several weeks. Her arrest and imprisonment this week has dramatically increased the urgency. Dr. Hoodfar’s lawyer has had no access to her and serious medical needs are not being addressed. She needs our support and she needs it now. Thank you for taking urgent action for Dr. Hoodfar.
