DALE WEST ~ CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY WAS A GREAT ONE
No hyperbole is needed to recap Championship Sunday at Silver Stick Collingwood. All five games provided their own genuine excitement to wrap up the 18th annual event in Collingwood.
The excitement started early as St. Mary’s Rock claimed the Novice Division in the opening game of the day with a 2-0 win over Strathroy Rockets. A goal by Higham Brody in the first minute of the third gave St. Mary’s a 2-0 lead that they held onto despite a strong third period push by Strathroy. The Rock earned a spot in the St. Clair Shores International Silver Stick finals with the victory.
In game two the Collingwood Blackhawks thrilled the hometown crowd with a solid performance in posting a 3-1 win over Kincardine Kinucks to earn a spot in the Pelham International Silver Stick AE finals. Griffin Gordon and Duff McGrogan scored in the first for Collingwood. Jack Martin had Collingwood’s third goal in the second, it was matched by Kincardine’s Jude Hodgins. Reid MacLeod turned away a spirited third period push by Kincardine to seal with win for Collingwood.
In the Windstone Real Estate Brokerage Peewee Final it went to a shoot out before Penetang Flames edged Collingwood 2-1. Carson Benkovski had given Penetang the lead halfway through the third period. The Midget game put it’s own stamp on one of the most competitive Championship Sunday roster of games ever.
Ennismore Eagles won 3-2 in overtime in their first ever trip to Silver Stick Collingwood. The Eagles saw a 2-0 lead evaporate when Josh Dikeos scored twice in the final two minutes of the regulation to force the extra period. Erice Lennox scored a power play goal with a backhanded shot under the cross bar with just 18 seconds remaining in overtime. Dawson Lickford and Jack Young scored the other Ennismore goals.
