Reminder about responsible pet ownership

The Town of Collingwood would like to remind all pet owners that there are rules they are required to follow, to ensure the safety of their own pets, as well as others within our community.

When using local parks and trails, pets are required to be leashed at all times. This helps prevent injury to other park and trail users, including other dogs. Unleashed dogs may also cause apprehension in other dogs and owners when approaching an unfamiliar, unleashed dog.

The Town of Collingwood has three off-leash dog recreation areas where dogs are permitted to be off-leash, subject to certain rules designed to keep all users safe.

A recent incident on the Black Ash Trail near J.J’s Trail saw a golden retriever dog injured when attacked by two other unleashed dogs. Animal Control Officers are reminding all pet owners they could face fines of up to $240 for an unleashed dog.

Pet owners are also responsible for cleaning up after their pets, in an effort to keep our parks, trails and sidewalks clean and unobstructed. Anyone failing to “stoop and scoop” could also face fines of $240.
